\nI’ve heard much about Autism and I’ve even known some people with Autism. According to Wikipedia: <\/span>Autism<\/b> is a neurodevelopmental disorder<\/a> characterized by impaired social interaction<\/a>, verbal<\/a> and non-verbal communication<\/a>, and restricted and repetitive behavior. I had never looked into it with very much detail until now. This is why I’m so happy that Rebekah has volunteered to be interviewed about what it’s like to have it. <\/span><\/div>\n

\nHi, my name is Rebekah, and I\u2019m an eighteen-year-old
\nstudent from England, who also happens to be autistic. When I\u2019m not studying
\ntowards a health and social care qualification which will help with my dream to
\nwork in the mental health sector, I enjoy writing fictional and non-fictional
\nworks, reading blog posts and novels, binge watching TV shows or YouTube
\nvideos, and researching psychological theories in some way. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

\nHow does your autism physically feel? How do you
\nthink it compares to those who don\u2019t have autism?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/b><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe way brains process senses is commonly different
\nbetween autistic people and those who aren\u2019t autistic. These sensory processing
\nproblems can often lead to autistic people feeling exposed, either
\nhyper-sensitive or hypo-sensitive to things going on around them. For example,
\nwhen someone touches me lightly, it feels like someone\u2019s sticking pins into
\nwhere they touched. On the other hand, I\u2019m hypo-sensitive to blood tests, so
\nthey can be a relaxing experiencing as opposed to a painful one. It\u2019s worth
\nmentioning that every autistic person experiences sensory processing a little
\ndifferently though, and my experiences may be completely different for someone
\nelse.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

\nHow do you feel about autism?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/b><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nI\u2019m proud to be autistic. I used to be quite
\nfrustrated and angry when I first received my diagnosis, but that was mostly
\nbecause of the challenges I\u2019ve faced, and I\u2019ve now realized that I wouldn\u2019t be
\nthe person I am today if I didn\u2019t have this disability that meant my brain
\nformed in a different way compared to other people\u2019s. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhat challenges does autism pose?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/b><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nCommunication is one of the biggest challenges,
\nespecially as most people seem to think it\u2019s a simple case of being verbal or
\nnon-verbal, when it\u2019s not like that at all. I\u2019m verbal, but I rely on social
\nscripts I\u2019ve made before a conversation occurs on a regular basis, and often
\nstumble on my words when I haven\u2019t prepared them. I also go non-verbal,
\nalthough for me, that\u2019s very occasional and mostly happens after meltdowns or
\nwhen I\u2019m in pain.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n
\nSocial situations are difficult because I struggle
\nto transfer social rules from one environment to another, and tend to embarrass
\nmyself on several occasions until I understand what\u2019s going on and how I should
\nact. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIs there anything you like about being autistic?<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/span><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nI think the sensory side of being autistic can be a
\ngood thing when it\u2019s a good<\/i>
\nsensation, because I can feel it more intensely than non-autistic people may be
\nable to. I\u2019m also hypo-sensitive to other types of pain.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nA lot of people seem to think autistic people are
\nless empathic than the general population, but a lot of us are actually hyper-empathic,
\nwhich means we feel things more intensely than most other people. This is great
\nconsidering I\u2019m studying to go into healthcare at the moment, and my friends
\nseem to appreciate it, too.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDo you think your day differs from others because of
\nbeing autistic?<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/span><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nYes, it definitely can do. I become exhausted after
\ndoing less than a lot of people because I have a limited amount of energy, a
\nlot of which I spend on mimicking other people in order to be successful in
\nsocial situations. It also takes a lot more energy and effort for me to process
\nand respond in conversation, which becomes extremely difficult if I become
\noverstimulated, because my brain doesn\u2019t consider verbal communication as one of its essential responsibilities. I have to rest a lot more than other people,
\nand if I forget to take time to recharge for a few days, it becomes really
\nobvious and the things I struggle with become so much harder to control. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDo you have any cultural differences between others who
\nare also autistic and those who are not?<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/span><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAutistic people are as varied as non-autistic
\npeople, but I think as a whole, the autistic community has a wide cultural
\nunderstanding of acceptance. It\u2019s great, because even the community don\u2019t agree
\non something, they don\u2019t judge someone else for it. We\u2019re also accepting of
\npeople\u2019s limits, and don\u2019t try to push them beyond that or judge them for
\nthings they can\u2019t do. I think the cultural differences that do occur are as a
\nresult of misunderstandings more than anything, though, and with the right
\nsupport (if required), autistic people can exist within a wider culture without
\nproblem. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhat are some stereotypes about autism that irk you?<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/span><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nPeople who think all autistic people are
\nsavants\u2014aka, geniuses. That isn\u2019t true. Just like non-autistic people, the
\nlevel of intelligence among autistic people varies greatly. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>I\u2019ve already mentioned it, but I hate the stereotype
\nthat autistic people have no empathy. This couldn\u2019t be less truthful; more
\ntruthful is that a lot of us express it differently.<\/span><\/span><\/span> Autistic people can\u2019t make friends or have
\nmeaningful relationships. This isn\u2019t true; while some autistic people may
\nprefer their own company, there are lots of us that enjoy friendships with
\nother people. I have friendships with people, and I don\u2019t think my autism makes
\nthem any less real than a neurotypical friendship. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThat autism is a male disorder, and girls with the
\ncondition just so happen to have a \u2018male brain.’ This dates back to when the
\ncondition was first discovered, but research has proved time and time again
\nthat this isn\u2019t the case.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nVaccines cause autism! I could go on for hours about
\nthis, but to keep it short: they don\u2019t. The doctor was discredited for his
\nclaims, and research has proved time and time again that this isn\u2019t the case.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWhat media portrays autism badly be it a movie, a
\nbook, or a TV show?<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/span><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nRainman<\/i>. I haven\u2019t watched this myself, but it has a
\nreally bad reputation for showing a stereotypical, two-dimensional version of
\nwhat autism actually is in accordance with a neurotypical view of the
\ncondition.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time<\/i>.
\nThis book\/movie\/theatre adaptation is, again, based on a stereotypical idea of
\nwhat autism is, and is written and explained by the father of an autistic
\nchild. Many autistic people agree that we should be able to speak up for
\nourselves, and having people speak up on our behalf is not the most helpful
\nthing. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n

\nThere aren\u2019t many, and many that are thought to be
\nautistic by the autism community aren\u2019t confirmed. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHowever, there is a book I recommend to anyone who
\nasks for one, which is On the Edge of Gone<\/i> by Corrine Duyvis. The author of
\nthis book is autistic, and the main character a 16 year old autistic girl, so
\nher reputation is very accurate. Unlike a lot of people, her disability wasn\u2019t
\nerased when it was seen as an inconvenience, and she wasn\u2019t cured in some
\ninspirational story, even though it would\u2019ve been easier in the Dystopian
\nsetting the story was set in.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nWho are your top three favorite characters who also
\nare autistic in books, movies, or shows?<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/span><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHouse
\nM.D. <\/span><\/b>Okay, so House isn\u2019t confirmed to be autistic, but
\nhe shows a lot<\/i> of traits, such as
\ndisliking change, and being really<\/i>
\nbad in social situations. Series 3 episode 5 of this show also has an autistic
\ncharacter in it, and although a lot of the attitudes aren\u2019t the greatest (the
\nparents practiced ABA, something frowned up in the autism community), House
\nseems to us his own understanding of the struggles he\u2019s faced to empathize with
\nthe boy. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDenise <\/i><\/span><\/b>from On The Edge of
\nGone<\/i>, for obvious reasons. It\u2019s such a good representation of autism,
\nespecially if you\u2019re looking for experiences from girls with the condition. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
