<\/span> It’s time for this week’s So Your Character is … Post! This is a weekly segment where I interview lovely volunteers from around the world to give you a firsthand account of being a citizen of their respective country or having a disability. I’m hoping to encourage international diversity, break stereotypes, and give writers a crash course on how to write a character from these different places on our planet. \nMy name is Dorka, I currently live in the capital city of Hungary, Budapest. I\u2019m a university student, doing my second university course right now and finished Korean Culture and Language course this spring. My hobbies include reading and photography, especially concert photography. Other than these I used to play the piano and am a huge fan of music in general.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span> What do you feel is unique to your country? Landmarks? Celebrations?<\/b><\/span>
\nI think one of the most unique things to my country is our language. It is unlike any in the world. It does have a language family but it really doesn\u2019t sound like anything. As for celebrations, Halloween is not a big thing in our country, but the day after it, All Saints\u2019 Day is. That day families gather together and go out together to cemeteries to light candles for the lost ones, murmur a quiet prayer for them. That night when people travel across the country most of the cemeteries are all lit up with candles, giving off a heartwarming feeling.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nTell me about your country’s environment. What are some of your favorite places?<\/b>
\nHungary is not a big country but we have quite a few things in here. I love the countryside, I\u2019ve grown up there, but I have to say that my ultimate love is definitely Budapest. This city captured my heart rather fast as I came to study here four years ago now. There are hidden tea-houses that you can only find if you know where they are, and me and my friends often relaxed at these places in between classes with long breaks.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

Tell me about your country’s food. What are some of your favorite dishes?<\/b>
\nHungarian food is rather tasty in my opinion. We like to use many spices; usually, they are not too spicy but we like to use paprika in most of our national foods. I think the most famous is Goulash soup, but my personal favorite is Hortob\u00e1gyi h\u00fasos palacsinta, which is basically pancakes stuffed with minced meat, baked together and has a nice sauce to it. I know it sounds weird but Hungarians like to eat everything with meat. <\/span>

<\/span> Besides these, we also love sweet things as well, so there is a huge variety of national desserts. One of my personal <\/span>favorites is t\u00far\u00f3 <\/span>rudi, which is essentially a bar that is composed of a thin chocolate-flavored outer coating and an inner filling of t\u00far\u00f3 (curd).<\/span>

\nTell me about any different speech patterns in your country. Slang? Idioms? Words for things such as \u201cbiscuits\u201d instead of \u201ccookies\u201d?<\/b>
\nThere is a great article<\/a> about the expressions we have in Hungary. But I want to share some from the article as a little taste of the expressions we have, that will sound funny for foreigners. Well, they are actually pretty funny when I think about it.<\/span>

<\/span> \u2022 <\/span>Hungarians don\u2019t say \u201cWhen pigs fly!\u201d, they say \u201cWhen red snow falls!\u201d (Majd ha piros h\u00f3 esik!)<\/span>
\n\u2022 <\/span>Hungarians don\u2019t say \u201cYou son of a b**ch!\u201d, they say \u201cYou jizz!\u201d (Te geci!)<\/span>
\n\u2022 <\/span>Hungarians don\u2019t say \u201cIt\u2019s all Greek to me\u201d, they say \u201cIt\u2019s Chinese for me\u201d (Ez nekem k\u00ednai).<\/span>
