<\/span>I know, I know, I said I’d do a Writing Lessons post today, but my brain has been pudding lately from working lots of hours (Iceland will be worth it! *pants, cries a little, passes out on bed*) so I can take some time off around Christmas. Thus I needed something easy and I’ve been wanting to participate in at least one part of Christine’s<\/a> linkup, so here we are. I’ll be answering questions for my steampunk fantasy novels Silver Hood<\/i> and Black Hood<\/i> both of which I worked on for NaNo. Let’s get started!<\/span><\/span>

\n
<\/span> 1. Firstly, how did writing this novel go all around?<\/span>
\n
<\/span> For both, I feel like I wrote a lot slower than past years. Maybe it\u2019s because I was glancing at outlines a lot but before I\u2019ve been able to hit like 500 words in ten minutes but this year I hit 400 words in ten minutes like once and averaged at like 300.<\/span>
\n
<\/span> Silver Hood<\/i>: I really did not like the first draft. I felt like it was mostly trash. I just didn\u2019t like how the characters acted. I kept trying to push them into boxes they didn\u2019t want to go into. And the plot had lots of parts I didn\u2019t like so I feel like in this draft I tapped into the characters much more and made the plot way more coherent.<\/span>
\n
<\/span> Black Hood<\/i>: I haven\u2019t finished this book yet though I\u2019m getting close. It\u2019s different than I expected but I like it better than Silver Hood<\/i>\u2019s first draft definitely.<\/span>
\n
<\/span> 2. Did it turn out like you expected or completely different? And how do you feel about the outcome?<\/span>
\n
<\/span> Both have definitely turned out well. They still need a lot A LOT of smoothing out but overall I\u2019m pretty satisfied.<\/span>
\n
<\/span> 3. What aspect of the story did you love writing about the most? (Characters, plot, setting, prose, etc.)<\/span>
\n
<\/span> The worldbuilding was really fun. In Silver Hood<\/i>. I like seeing more of Isriki since the first book focused on Silfurlund and in Black Hood<\/i>, the story spends a lot of time in a barren region the complete opposite of the former. The religion definitely developed a lot and though I\u2019m intending to put this in the general market, I\u2019m seeing some Christian elements subtly come through. Some angels even found their way in there.<\/span>

\n<\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/div>\n


<\/span> 4. How about your least favorite part?<\/span>
\n
<\/span> Realizing that Silver Hood<\/i> needs a third draft and another rewrite. XD I had to add new material that needs to be smoothed over to fit into the story and I realized some more scenes that need to be added.<\/span>
\n
<\/span> 5. What do you feel like needs the most work?<\/span>
\n
<\/span> The prose in general. It\u2019s just chunky and I know I didn\u2019t describe enough in many areas and said: \u201cthey did ____.\u201d <\/span>
\n
<\/span> 6. How do you feel about your characters now that the novel is done? Who\u2019s your favorite? Least favorite? Anyone surprise you? Give us all the details!<\/span>
\n
<\/span> Well, I definitely want to make more time for character development scenes. I\u2019ve been so paranoid about writing fluff that now I feel like I need more character scenes instead of just plot plot plot. But Claes is a darling as always and I like how Sonne is developing in this book. And Einer is such a grumpster but he\u2019s really amusing to write. It\u2019s hard to pick a favorite. XD <\/span>

<\/span> I like Mor\u2019s arc a lot. She\u2019s changed so much than she was in the first book and I\u2019m happy that change is so evident. I had a friend say she\u2019s a \u201crescue doggo.\u201d She really is. Mor\u2019s spirit animal is a Saint Bernard. She has to save everyone and keep them safe. Once she makes a promise to do something she\u2019ll do it or die trying.<\/span>

<\/span> Claes is my damaged Great Pyrenees. He\u2019s fluffy and kind. Sonne is a White Labrador retriever. She\u2019s energetic and steadfast. And Einer is a borzoi that didn\u2019t grow up in a good home. Lots of sharp edges and snarly.<\/span>
\n
<\/span> How did this evolve into comparing my characters to dogs?<\/span>
\n
<\/span> … I’m not even a dog person.<\/p>\n

<\/span> 7. What\u2019s your next plan of action with this novel?<\/span><\/span>
\n
<\/span> Well, I have to finish Black Hood<\/i> but I\u2019m letting Silver Hood<\/i> sit then I\u2019m going to work on editing and making this thing smoother.<\/span>
\n
<\/span> 8. If you could have your greatest dream realized for this novel, what would it be?<\/span>
\n
<\/span> It used to be wanting my books made into movies, but I’d actually like them made into a series on Netflix or Hulu. A show would give more time for fleshing out and by the quality of the shows coming out these days, they’d do my stories justice.<\/span>
\n
<\/span> 9. Share a snippet of one of your most favorite scenes!<\/span>
\n
<\/span> Most of my favorite scenes involve major spoilers, so here’s a little snippet of a little comical scene from Silver Hood<\/i>. For reference, Aska is very sullen normally, Claes it the POV character, Fannar is like ten, and a zburator is a Romanian dragon wolf. Here we go!<\/span><\/p>\n

\nClaes,\u201d Aska said.<\/span>
<\/span>He turned to face her.<\/span>
<\/span>Aska shook her head, fluffing out her knotted blue mane. \u201cI didn\u2019t think you had courage to approach that zburator.\u201d<\/span>
<\/span>\u201cTranslation: you impressed her.\u201d Maeja giggled.<\/span>
<\/span>Aska shot her a glare and Maeja covered her mouth to suppress the noise.<\/span>
<\/span>\u201cI thought it was going to bite your hand off,\u201d said Fannar. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n\n

\n10. Did you glean any new writing and\/or life lessons from writing this novel?<\/span>
\n
<\/span> I realized I haven\u2019t made novel writing a priority this year. I put blogging and articles before it and that kinda defeats the purpose of my chosen career. I realized I really miss just creating stories instead of just doing all the side work. So next year I definitely want to make novel writing a priority even if that means cutting down on different sorts of writing.<\/span>
