Some of the best characters are animals like Toothless, Appa, or Zwei. They\u2019re adorable and they do help the plot move forward. I\u2019m going to be discussing pets as they would in a standard fiction novel, not as protagonists like in <i>Lady and the Tramp<\/i> or <i>Homeward Bound<\/i> nor slice of life with the book entirely centered them like <i>Marley and Me<\/i> or <i>That Quail Robert<\/i>. That\u2019s for another post.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: 'georgia' , 'times new roman' , serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'georgia' , 'times new roman' , serif;\">Let\u2019s get started!\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'georgia' , 'times new roman' , serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'georgia' , 'times new roman' , serif;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/victoriagracehowell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/2002B252812529.gif?resize=400%2C180&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"400\" height=\"180\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"200\" data-original-width=\"442\" \/><\/span><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><!-- more -->1.) Pets Can Be Main Characters<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'georgia' , 'times new roman' , serif;\">When it comes to <i>How to Train Your Dragon<\/i>, Toothless is just as quintessential as Hiccup. Like Hiccup, Toothless even goes through his own character arc as he learns confidence and independence throughout the series. On the flip side, Maximus from <i>Tangled<\/i> is Flynn\u2019s main antagonist and causes him a lot of trouble. However, take care that writing a pet as a main character that they don\u2019t overshadow the main character.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: 'georgia' , 'times new roman' , serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'georgia' , 'times new roman' , serif;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/victoriagracehowell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/200.gif?resize=400%2C261&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"400\" height=\"261\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"200\" data-original-width=\"306\" \/><\/span><\/div>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: 'georgia' , 'times new roman' , serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n2.) Pets Can Be Sidekicks<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'georgia' , 'times new roman' , serif;\">Disney can attest to this. Meeko (<i>Pocahontas<\/i>), Abu (<i>Aladdin<\/i>) Cri-Kee (<i>Mulan<\/i>), Philippe (<i>Beauty and the Beast<\/i>), and Djali (<i>The Hunchback of Notre Dame<\/i>) are just a few examples. These characters are always at their owners\u2019 sides and offer assistance in tight spaces or comfort when they\u2019re feeling down. One of my favorite moments with Meeko is when he braids Mulan\u2019s hair when she\u2019s upset. Djali helps Esmeralda get away from Frollo\u2019s guards. Momo has helped free Aang from bonds and defeat fire nation soldiers. Pets as sidekicks can be useful in a lot of ways!\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: 'georgia' , 'times new roman' , serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<table class=\"tr-caption-container\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\" align=\"center\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'georgia' , 'times new roman' , serif;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/victoriagracehowell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/giphy.gif?resize=640%2C324&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"640\" height=\"324\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"254\" data-original-width=\"498\" \/><\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"tr-caption\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'georgia' , 'times new roman' , serif;\">This is just the cutest thing ever.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2>3.) Pets Can Be Catalysts<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'georgia' , 'times new roman' , serif;\">Pet deaths can be devastating but they can spur a plot forward. When John Wick\u2019s dog in the movie of its name is killed this makes him go on rampaging path of vengeance. In the Never Ending Story when Artax sinks into the Swamp of Sadness Atreyu is given a huge obstacle in his quest. It can be painful to kill off these characters but it can be powerful storytelling.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'georgia' , 'times new roman' , serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'georgia' , 'times new roman' , serif;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/victoriagracehowell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/John-Wick-3-Dog-Deaths.jpg?resize=640%2C336&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"640\" height=\"336\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"631\" data-original-width=\"1200\" \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'georgia' , 'times new roman' , serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<h2>4.) Take Care Pets Don\u2019t Get in the Way<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'georgia' , 'times new roman' , serif;\">If pets are more hindrance than help they can fast get irritating. I think Hei-Hei from <i>Moana<\/i> is hilarious but his hilarity is what saves him from being extremely annoying as he almost loses the Heart of Te Fiti multiple times. If pets foil the protagonists with stupidity or wander stupidly into danger one too many times, a reader can wish they\u2019d be killed. In <i>Critical Role<\/i>, Scanlan criticizes Trinket the Bear because he nearly gets killed in every battle.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: 'georgia' , 'times new roman' , serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'georgia' , 'times new roman' , serif;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/victoriagracehowell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/tumblr_oo61eiTs4g1qa0s3ho1_500.gif?resize=320%2C124&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"320\" height=\"124\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"194\" data-original-width=\"500\" \/><\/span><\/div>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: 'georgia' , 'times new roman' , serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n5.) Take Care Pets Aren\u2019t Extraneous<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'georgia' , 'times new roman' , serif;\">Does the protagonist really need a pet or is the pet just there to have it or to fill a prerequisite? How can the pets help the plot? Meeko plays an important role when he steals John Smith\u2019s compass only to give it to Pocahontas at the right time. Abu picks Aladdin\u2019s chains when he\u2019s in prison. Cri-Kee helps Mushu order Mulan\u2019s troops sent to the front.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'georgia' , 'times new roman' , serif;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/victoriagracehowell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/tumblr_m8jao8qRQ21rd2glio1_500.gif?resize=640%2C344&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"640\" height=\"344\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"269\" data-original-width=\"500\" \/><\/span><\/div>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: 'georgia' , 'times new roman' , serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n6.) Make Sure Pets Are Helpful<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'georgia' , 'times new roman' , serif;\">You don\u2019t want pets to be sort of just &#8230; there &#8230; not doing much. What are they for? Appa (<i>Avatar: The Last Airbender<\/i>), Naga (<i>The Legend of Korra<\/i>), and Philippe (<i>Beauty and the Beast<\/i>) are used for transportation. Pets can be there to help with loneliness like Pascal (<i>Tangled<\/i>) or Cleo and Figaro (<i>Pinnochio<\/i>). Pets can also help handicapped characters like Ayden from<i> Quest for Camelot<\/i>.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: 'georgia' , 'times new roman' , serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'georgia' , 'times new roman' , serif;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/victoriagracehowell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/tumblr_ljcodunCek1qewk6no1_500.gif?resize=640%2C482&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"640\" height=\"482\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"377\" data-original-width=\"500\" \/><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'georgia' , 'times new roman' , serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: 'georgia' , 'times new roman' , serif;\">Pets can also be used for hunting or fighting. It can be plausible of course for a character to have pet just because they want one (Fleetfoot from <i>Throne of Glass<\/i> &amp; Louie from <i>Princess Diaries<\/i>), but if they\u2019re sticking around throughout the majority of the plot it\u2019s best that they have an active role. Otherwise, you\u2019ll have this pet and be like uh so what do I do with the pet now if I don\u2019t want it to die? I need it to be somewhere out of the way since it will totally die if it sticks around or I\u2019ll just forget about. (No I totally have not had this problem in my own writing.)<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: 'georgia' , 'times new roman' , serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'georgia' , 'times new roman' , serif;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/victoriagracehowell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/tumblr_mm9gnkw4a81qc6mr3o8_r2_250.gif?resize=320%2C180&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"320\" height=\"180\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"138\" data-original-width=\"245\" \/><\/span><\/div>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: 'georgia' , 'times new roman' , serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\nConclusion<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'georgia' , 'times new roman' , serif;\">Overall have fun with it and be creative!
