\nNow, hopefully you decided to
\nstick with me long enough to find out why you <\/span>should<\/i> keep reading. Today, I\u2019m going to be sharing with you about
\nhook-lines. First, let\u2019s talk about what they are and why they\u2019re important to
\nyour writing. After that, I\u2019ll let you judge for yourself what makes the best
\nhook-line.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

\n
\nWhat are Hook-lines?<\/span> – <\/b>If you\u2019ve ever been fishing,
\nyou\u2019re a lot closer to understanding what a hook-line is than a lot of people. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n


<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEven if you haven\u2019t been fishing, you know that the purpose of a hook is to
\ncatch the fish. A hook-line is a metaphor. <\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\nIn writing, a hook-line is
\nthe very first line of your novel or short story. Just like the fish, you want
\nto \u201chook\u201d your reader on your story. The rest of your story you is then spent trying to \u201creel\u201d the reader all the way in. Great, right? Now let\u2019s talk about
\nwhy they\u2019re really important.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\nIt\u2019s been said that when in
\nbookstores looking for something to buy, modern day readers will only read the
\nfirst two pages of a book. If they\u2019re not caught up in the story by then, they
\nset the book down. That really gives you a page to interest them\u2026and you better
\nmake the most of it.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\nThat\u2019s why you want one
\nreally strong, intriguing line for your opening sentence. You want something
\nthat will make your reader want<\/i> to
\nkeep reading to find out. So what kind of lines do that?<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\n
\nLearn For Yourself – <\/span>There are many methods of
\nstarting a story, including dialogue, narration, setting, and conflict.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\nGenerally speaking, starting
\nwith the setting and the weather is a huge turn-off in a hook-line. Why should
\nyour reader care about the setting if they\u2019re not even sure they want to read
\nthe story? And who wants to read about weather? Most people don\u2019t even want to
\nlisten to their grandparents discuss that! If you decide that you want to start
\nthe story with the setting or with weather, you should make sure that it has
\nimmediate significance to your story. By significance, I mean that it becomes a
\ncrucial part of the story on the first page.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\nPresenting conflict in the
\nfirst sentence might be one of the best ways to immediately draw somebody into
\nthe story, but there\u2019s also a pitfall that must be avoided: having a character
\nalready in action or in danger is not encouraged by this writer. This is
\nbecause your reader has no reason to care about a character in danger, and
\nespecially not in the first line. So how do you use conflict without putting
\nthe cart before the horse? <\/span><\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\nWhen I use conflict, I normally go for conflict
\nbetween characters. This reveals that there is some animosity between them, but
\nit can be more generalized. You can also start conflict with something as
\nsimple as, \u201cThe broken vase could not have spelled Kasey\u2019s doom any better if
\nthe shattered pieces had formed the letters themselves.\u201d See, there\u2019s already a
\ndilemma here: the broken vase. The point of starting a story with conflict is
\nto make the reader want to see how this minor issue is resolved. By then,
\nthey\u2019ve already invested their time and emotions into the character which keeps
\nthem reading.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\nNo matter which method you
\npick, the point is always to grab the reader\u2019s interest. A simple exercise to
\ndevelop stronger hook-lines would be to read the opening lines of your favorite
\nbooks. That\u2019s it: the first sentence. After you read the first sentence, ask
\nyourself if you would keep reading and also answer why or why not. <\/span><\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\nLet\u2019s try it
