\nI\u2019m proud to be able to talk to one of my favorite
\nauthors today. His name is Mr. Bryan Davis. He is the bestselling author of
\nseveral young adult fantasy series: Dragons in Our Midst<\/i>, Oracles of Fire<\/i>,
\nEchoes from the Edge,<\/i> and Dragons of Starlight<\/i>. <\/span><\/span>
\n
<\/span><\/span>
\nHe currently lives in Tennessee<\/st1:state><\/st1:place> with his wife,
\nSusie, and their kids. His books have been a big inspiration to me, both in my
\nperspective about dragons and writing. He urged me to go to my first writer\u2019s
\nconference where he taught the teen track. My writing hasn\u2019t been the same
\nsince. <\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

\nSo
\nMr. Davis, what inspired you to write YA Christian fantasy? How did that dream
\nto be an author form?<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\nIt started with a dream about a boy who
\ncould breathe fire. I wasn\u2019t a fantasy fan at the time, and I\u2019m still pretty
\npicky about which fantasy stories I like, so it didn\u2019t occur to me that this
\nwas a story idea until I told my oldest son about the dream. He suggested that
\nI make it into a fantasy novel.<\/span><\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\nI
\nbelieve that storytelling is the most powerful way to communicate truth in a
\nmemorable way. We are wired to connect with stories and the conflicts the
\ncharacters go through. Because of the emotions involved, we can empathize with
\nportrayals that reflect some of our own experiences or else issues we have
\nconsidered even if we haven\u2019t experienced them ourselves.<\/span>
\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\n
\n<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\nSince my books are faith-based, the mainstream
\npublishers didn\u2019t show any interest. I often heard, \u201cToo spiritual\u201d or \u201cToo
\nChristian.\u201d The Christian publishers at that time weren\u2019t producing fantasy at
\nall, and certainly not a series about dragons. I couldn\u2019t find a significant
\nfantasy series for young people that had been published by a Christian company
\nin the last thirty years. It didn\u2019t matter that the <\/span>Chronicles of Narnia<\/i>
\nhad been one of the greatest sellers in history. In fact, when I mentioned that
\nto one editor, hoping the Narnia success would open a door, he said, \u201cYou\u2019re not
\nC. S. Lewis.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\nBetween agents and publishers I collected about two
\nhundred rejection notices, which I might use to wallpaper my office someday. I
\nrewrote Raising Dragons<\/i> about
\ntwenty-four times, changing it drastically in some of the rewrites. I think I
\nmade it even more radical as time went on, perhaps thinking that it might just
\nend up as a story for myself and my family.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\nI finally met Dan Penwell of AMG Publishers. He had
\nalready contracted with me for a non-fiction book called The Image of a
\nFather<\/i>, and although AMG had never produced fiction, he took interest in my
\nweird dragons story. AMG liked it so much, they started a fiction line with the
\nseries, and it has become their best-selling line of books.<\/o:p><\/b><\/span><\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/b><\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/b>
\nThat\u2019s
\na really cool story. I\u2019ve had several novel ideas of mine inspired by dreams. Taking
\nfrom a <\/span><\/b><\/p>\n
\n<\/div>\n

lot of your books, you enjoy dragons. Dragons are indeed epic, but why
\ndo you like to write about them in particular? <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/div>\n

\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\nAt the beginning of my author\u2019s journey, the topic
\nof dragons wasn\u2019t on my radar screen at all. I neither liked<\/span><\/p>\n
\n<\/span><\/div>\n

them nor disliked
\nthem. The dream about a boy who could breathe fire changed that. When my son
\nand I brainstormed the story idea, we decided that the boy had parents who were
\nonce dragons. That was my first notion to write about dragons.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n

\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\nTo this day I\u2019m still not enthused about dragons, at
\nleast with regard to how other people write about them. I can take them or
\nleave them. My stories are really about the humans. The dragons are a device to
\nmake the story world cool and exciting. How can it not be interesting when you
\nhave huge, scaly, fire-breathing animals that can fly and destroy almost
\nanything? And when you allow them to interact with humans, whether on a
\nfriendly or adversarial basis, the entire scenario gets even more interesting.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\nI have enjoyed writing about dragons. They are,
\nindeed, exciting. Yet, the journeys of the human are still the more interesting
\nand inspiring to me.<\/o:p><\/b><\/span><\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/b><\/div>\n
\n<\/a>Interesting. Out
\nof all of your characters, who is your favorite? <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\nThat\u2019s almost like asking which of my children is my
\nfavorite. Almost. I have been thrilled by several of my characters, but reader
\nfeedback allows me to choose one over all the others. <\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/st1:personname><\/div>\n
\nBonnie Silver<\/span><\/st1:personname>
\nhas inspired thousands of readers, male and female alike, in profound ways. I
\nhave heard from seven teenagers who have told me that Bonnie has kept them from
\ncommitting suicide. Hundreds more have told me that Bonnie has drawn them
\ncloser to God and helped them during challenging trials in their lives. It is
\namazing that this humble servant of God, a \u201cperson\u201d who is a character in a
\nfantasy world, has done so much to inspire so many.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/b><\/div>\n
\nBonnie is indeed one of my favorites too. She is an amazing character. On
\nyour Facebook, you post often about how you love Mondays. Why is that your
\nfavorite day? <\/o:p><\/span><\/b>
\n
<\/span><\/b><\/div>\n
\nSince I rest from writing on Sunday, I am always
\nexcited to wake up on Monday and get back to writing. I love what I do, and
\neach beginning of a week is like a fresh start on a new and exciting journey.
\nSince I don\u2019t outline my stories, I am thrilled to sit down and find out what\u2019s
\ngoing to happen in my story, because I truly don\u2019t know.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\nIt saddens me when I hear people bemoan Mondays. I
\nwish they could go with me on an exciting adventure. Mine is truly a dream
\noccupation. <\/o:p><\/b><\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/b><\/div>\n

\n<\/span><\/a><\/div>\n

Very cool. A
\nlot of young writers like to read my blog. What advice do you have for a young
\nperson pursuing publication? <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
\nI know many aspiring young writers, and most of them
\nwant to write fantasy or some other speculative fiction. I would tell those
\nauthors to break free from the Tolkien and Lewis mold. Don\u2019t try to create
\nanother Middle-earth with elves and orcs. Don\u2019t send kids to a new world
\nthrough a wardrobe-like portal where a Christ-figure dwells.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\nI\u2019d like to see another
\ncontemporary\/fantasy blend like mine. I think young people of today relate to a
\nworld they recognize, and they enjoy seeing weird happenings within it. Still,
\nthere are many ways to explore new other-world fantasy ideas as well. Think out-of-the-box
\nand write your passions. Don\u2019t chase after what the market appears to want.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n


\nCheck out books from the
\nlibrary on how to write better. Get people who know writing to read your
\nwriting and give you pointers. Study writing that you enjoy and figure out what
\nmakes it so good. Also, have patience with your writing. Don’t try to hurry it.
\nTake your time to build scenes and characters.<\/o:p><\/span>
\n
\nAttend writers\u2019
\nconferences where you can get professional feedback on your work. They are
\nexpensive, but nearly every career requires a financial investment in learning
\nthe craft.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\nAspiring writers, I commend you for wanting to
\ncommunicate your ideas and passions. That motivation will carry you far. You
\nwill hit roadblocks, and the temptation to become discouraged might be
\noverwhelming. <\/span><\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\nDon\u2019t give up. If God has put within you the passion to write,
\nthen you can\u2019t give up. Don\u2019t lose sight of the message that God has given you
\nto convey. If God has really called you to pursue this dream, then you have no
\nchoice but to continue.<\/o:p><\/span>
\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/b><\/div>\n
\nThat is some really good advice. I hope it’s inspired the readers as much as it’s inspired me over the years. So
\nyou\u2019re having a kickstarter for a graphic novel of Dragons in Our Midst, can
\nyou tell me more about that?<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\nJames Art Ville is an illustrator who is working on
\na graphic novel version of Raising
\nDragons<\/i>, the first book in Dragons in our Midst. He decided to take a step
\nof faith and quit his job to pursue becoming a fulltime illustrator. Because of
\nthat decision, he will need upfront money to make ends meet while he works on
\nthis huge project.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\nThat\u2019s why he created a Kickstarter \u201ccrowd funding\u201d
\nproject. People can make monetary pledges to the fund, and they receive cool
\nprizes in return, like an appearance of their own likeness in the graphic
\nnovel. If, however, the project doesn\u2019t get fully funded by May 23, the pledges
\nwill be canceled, and he will get nothing. So I hope everyone will consider
\npledging.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
