So you\u2019ve spent countless
\nhours pounding out or scribbling out a manuscript, but now you\u2019re worried that
\nnobody would ever want to publish it. \u201cAfter all,\u201d you tell yourself, \u201cWhy would
\nanybody pay attention to my stories?\u201d I\u2019ve been there, just like I\u2019d bet that
\nevery other young writer has.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\nToday, I\u2019m going to share a
\nbit of advice that author Bryan Davis once shared with me. If you feel like
\nsomething is missing in your writing even after struggling to perfect technique,
\nmaybe this post will answer your question.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\n
\n1.) Bryan Davis\u2019s Advice – <\/span>As a young writer facing the
\ncrisis outlined in my first paragraph, I sent Bryan Davis a message asking for
\nhelp. He replied back with a single bit of advice that I\u2019ve never forgotten. He
\nsaid (and this is a rough paraphrase):<\/span><\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/div>\n

\n\u201cWrite what you are passionate about. If
\nyou are passionate about your story, that passion will be sensed by your
\nreaders and will draw them even more into your story.\u201d <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\nTalk about an
\neye-opener!<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\nAs I\u2019ve dabbled in Creative
\nWriting classes in college, my professor said something that drilled this in
\neven more. He advised me to me read John Gardner\u2019s book, \u201cOn Becoming a
\nNovelist.\u201d While my professor was explaining who Gardner was, I couldn\u2019t help but
\nwonder how I\u2019d never heard of such a great writer\u2026until my professor reached
\nhis last two sentences.<\/span>
\n
<\/span>
\nThis is what I was told about Gardner:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n \u201cHe was a
\nflawless writer and a meticulous editor. When you read John Gardner, you cannot
\nfind a single sentence that is flawed. His writing was perfect\u2026and the most
\nboring that you\u2019ll ever read. If one could combine the technical soundness of
\nGardner with the thrilling suspense of Stephen King, that one would be a great
\nwriter.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\nThere it is again, although
\nnot as obvious: passion. This is the thing that Gardner\u2019s fiction lacked
\naccording to my professor.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\nIf you\u2019re wondering if
\npassion is truly necessary in writing fiction, then ask yourself this: if you
\nare not passionate about your story, then why should anybody else be?<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\n
\n2.) Passion, where does
\nit come from? – <\/span>When contemplating this
\nsubject, I tend to first picture passion as being as elusive to find as the Muse.
\nThen, I realize that unadulterated passion is more a part of my life than
\nwriting. (Don\u2019t be too shocked at that statement!)<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\nYou see, the thing I\u2019m most
\npassionate about doesn\u2019t even involve stories; it involves late summer nights,
\na lot of sweat, and tears of both sorrow and happiness. The greatest passion
\nthat God has given me comes from being a Camp Counselor and it is the passion
\nfor reaching out to young girls, who have no one else to talk to, to draw them
\ncloser to our Savior. When I think about my younger friends and the kind of
\ngarbage that they have to go through, I feel as if my blood surges. There are
\nfew things that I would not do to help them.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\nStop for just a moment and
\nthink about what you\u2019re most passionate about. It doesn\u2019t have to be something
\ngrand and noble. Even pain at a person lost in your life can be counted as
\npassion; after all, you are passionate about their memories, right?<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\nSo how does passion for
\nsomething that\u2019s not related to writing help you put passion in your writing?<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\n
\n3.) Transferring Passion
\ninto Your Writing – <\/span>For me, it\u2019s easy. Two
\nsummers ago, I had an epiphany concerning my camp girls. While listening to
\nthem talk about the very adult-like troubles they faced in situations, I
\nrealized that all across America there are young children just like my girls.
\nThey go through trouble with nobody to talk to them. In some cases, they go
\nthrough trouble without feeling as if anybody even cares about them.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\nWhen I realized this, it
\nrevolutionized my writing. I went from writing whatever struck my fancy to
\ndeveloping a mission statement. I now write \u201creal stories\u201d that can speak to
\nyoung adults who have very real problems. In essence, my passion for helping my
\nCamp girls transferred into a passion for writing stories that those same girls
\ncould relate to.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\nThat\u2019s all good and well, but
\nhow does that help somebody whose primary passion is sports, or a relationship?<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\n1.) Let your passion for
\nwhatever it is inspire you and your character<\/span> – This doesn\u2019t mean that you have
\nto write sports stories if that\u2019s your other-life passion. Let your love shine
\nthrough in some of your characters, or think about the kind of character traits
\nyou often see when doing whatever. If you\u2019re passionate about your close-knit
\nfamily, consider portraying a family group of characters that way. If you can\u2019t
\nlive without watching football every weekend, remember this and let a character
\nalso feel this addiction.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\n2.) Reflect for a moment on
\nsomething that you\u2019re passionate about – <\/span>Pay attention to that thrill when you
\nidentify something as being important. This is how you want to feel when you\u2019re
\nwriting or editing your story. Every now and then, stop your work and recreate
\nthat feel. Ask yourself: am I passionate about these characters, about this
\nplot-line, about what this story is about?<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\n3.) Remember to have fun –<\/span> If
\nyou\u2019re passionate about something, you\u2019re going to enjoy working on it. It
\nfollows that if you\u2019re not having fun while writing, then you\u2019re doing
\nsomething wrong. Relax a little bit, and make sure you have fun crafting your
\nstory.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\n4.) Write something that
\nmatters to you –<\/span> Think about all your favorite books. Even if it\u2019s a fantasy,
\nthen chances are that your favorite book says something about what matters to
\nyou. Learn to identify why that book matters to you; is it because of who the
\ncharacters are, or because of a theme that runs strongly through the book?<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
\nRemember, a writer who is
\npassionate about his work is one that has a reason to write. <\/b>What\u2019s your
\nreason?<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n<\/span><\/div>\n
